Food Events - December 2010

Event Name:
No Croutons Required - Festive Photos

Hosting Blog:
Tinned Tomatoes

Theme: - Festive Photos

Event Start Date: now
Event Deadline: 2o December 2010

December is here and it is time to veer away from our regular monthly soup and salad recipes. We are all so busy in December so I like to ask for a festive photo instead of a recipe.

It is snowing heavily here with the garden hidden under a few feet of snow, so I know that other bloggers from the UK will have no problems in capturing a suitable image, but don't worry if you do not have a wintry landscape to feature, you could take a photo of your Christmas decorations, a winter dish you have cooked or baked or a festive photo of your children.

Theme: Sweet Soup

Event Start Date: now
Event Deadline: 15 December 2010

Calling all Bookworm Foodies!
can you make up a sweet soup Thomas Bernhard would remember?

In his memoir Gathering Evidence, the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard talks about a "sweet soup" that he loved as a child (a post on Bernhard's description of this soup can be found here). Berhnard says that the soup, which he sometimes ate for breakfast at a boarding school for troubled boys, was simply "a mixture of milk, flour, and cocoa served in soup plates, and I adored it."

I have a copy of Crave: a passion for chocolate by Maureen McKeon that I bought myself on a whim after having seen it in a bookshop. It's a lovely book, but for some reason I've never got around to using it. So rather than it sitting idly by on my bookshelf, I thought it would make a nice Christmas present for someone - so I am running a little giveaway / competition, with this as the prize.

I have five questions for you. The answers shouldn't be too difficult to find if you can spare a few moments to search through my blog.

Event Name:
Morphy Richards Flavour Savour Giveaway

Hosting Blog:
Fuss Free Flavours

Theme: Slow Cooker Giveaway (UK only)

Event Start Date: now
Event Deadline: 7 December 2010

I was recently sent a Morphy Richards Flavour Savour slow cooker for review. As well as the traditional slow cook, it also browns. Slow cooking, although fantastic, is not quite as simple as chucking everything in the pot and letting it simmer; you really do need to brown the meat and saute the vegetables first. This means using an additional pan, frying off the meat, then transferring to the slow cooker to cook. The Flavour Savour does both jobs remarkably well.

I am delighted to have a 4.5lt Flavour Savour worth £79.99 to give away for one lucky reader, and a discount of 35% on both models for everyone!

Event Name:
We Should Cocoa

Hosting Blog:
Chocolate Log Blog

Theme: Dates

Event Start Date: now
Event Deadline: 25 December 2010

For the last few weeks I've been debating what ingredient we should use for this month's We Should Cocoa. With Christmas coming and the deadline for the challenge being Christmas Day, it had to be a seasonal ingredient. Figs, dates, oranges and cinnamon immediately sprung to mind. Well oranges are lovely and cinnamon is my favourite spice, but I wanted something a bit more challenging than these two. So a toss up between figs and dates - hmmmm?

Well, I hope everyone likes dates because that's what I've plumped for. Just thinking of those Medjool dates has me salivating, then there are all those sticky datey cakes and tray bakes and date syrup is becoming increasingly easy to find. I'm sure you'll come up with plenty of ideas.

The theme, as the title of this post suggests , is CHOCOLATE EXTRAVAGANZA. I am a hard core fan of anything chocolate, so I couldn't think of a better theme than this!

So just in case you happen (I know you will) to bake anything with chocolate in it, from cakes to cookies, tarts to pies, hot & cold puddings, souffles etc do send it to the Monthly Mingle. It is a monthly food (and drink) photography event open to all bloggers who have posted a food photograph on their blogs. Photographs are submitted from blog posts of the previous months and these are judged, scored and the winners are selected in each of three categories (edibility, aesthetics, and originality).
