Food Events - February 2011

Event Name:
Slow Cooking

Hosting Blog:
Tinned Tomatoes

Theme: slow cooking in a slow cooker, pot or casserole

Event Start Date: now
Event Deadline: 20 March 2011

I have a new slow cooker, but I am absolutely clueless as to what to cook in it.

I would like you to come up with a recipe for me to try in my slow cooker. It can be absolutely anything, as long as it is suitable for vegetarians. Sweet or savoury. You don't need to own a slow cooker to come up with a recipe either. You could create your recipe in a casserole dish in the oven or a pot on the cooker top.

I will be choosing two winners. The UK winner will receive their own Flavour Savour (slow cooker), courtesy of Morphy Richards and so my other readers do not feel left out, I am offering a copy of Market Vegetarian by Ross Dobson to my international winner.

Event Name:
Win a copy of Cookery School

Hosting Blog:
Tinned Tomatoes

Theme: Cookbook Giveaway (UK only)

Event Start Date: now
Event Deadline: 20 February 2011

Cookery School is a new cookery programme airing daily on Channel 4. It stars Michelin-starred Richard Corrigan and food writer and chef Gizzi Erskine, who work with 6 amateur cooks each week. Each day the students have to master 3 dishes in the hope of making it through to the final.

I have one copy of the Cookery School cookbook which ties in with the series, to give away to one lucky reader. The book is designed to be a written cookery school. You simply work your way through the chapters, gaining skills as you go. Now I know you are all great cooks anyway, but I also know you love food and cookery books, so I know you will be tempted.

Event Deadline: 25 February 2011

Ever since I first came across Matcha Chocolat, I've been wanting to experiment with what was a fairly new concept to me: tea and chocolate. I had a bash back in July when I made green tea cupcakes and chocrhutea, but I've been saving any further trials until I thought the time was right to use this combination in a We Should Cocoa challenge. So, there you have it, this month's special ingredient is tea.

To add a bit of additional spice this month, we have Katie Christoffers of Matcha Chocolat awarding a prize to one lucky participant - a box of Masala Chai Caramels.

Nothing is more intimate, or more effective at creating friendships than cooking and sharing meals together, even it is virtually. But hey, if you live in the same area as another blogger what's to stop you from gathering in your own kitchen for this challenge.

Choose a dish to prepare and invite 1(one) blogger to create that dish with you. You can source your recipe from a cookbook, magazine, blog or any other source. Your dish can be sweet or savoury; easy or complicated.

Decide upon a date that you can both mutually post your recipe within a 4 week time frame.

Inspired by Masterchef

Hosting Blog:
Searching for Spice

Theme: Recipes inspired by those cooked on Masterchef

Event Start Date: now
Event Deadline: 25 February 2011

I am the biggest Masterchef fan. I love it. I’ve tried to enter, I’ve got the cookbook and I’ve been to the pop-up restaurant. So I was of course very excited when I found out that Masterchef UK begins again this Wednesday and runs for 15 weeks. I’ve decided that each week I’m going to try to recreate a dish at home inspired by the show that week and then blog about it. But why just do this on my own? Why not turn it into an event? If you follow this blog you’ll know that I love entering competitions. Two of my favourites are Daring Cooks and Taste and Create as they both push me to try something different. I’m hoping that Inspired by Masterchef will have the same effect.

Random Recipe Challenge

Hosting Blog:
Belleau Kitchen

Theme: pick a randon cookbook recipe (no cheating)

Event Start Date: now
Event Deadline: 27 February 2011

... I'm sure, like me, you have hundreds of fabulous cook books at home... I get new ones for every birthday and Christmas... and now that I've started blogging they seem to come in more frequently than ever before... and I do LOVE to read them, flick through them for inspiration and go back to them when in need of a show-stopper dish... but I do tend to stick to what I know and I realise that my limited repertoire is becoming a little too samey... so (and I'll finally get around to it...) the challenge is this:

1. take all your cook books off the shelf and shuffle them ( a friendly giant will help)

2. close your eyes and run your fingers down their spines and stop at a random book

3. now, close your eyes again and randomly open the chosen book at a page

4. cook this dish (if it's something you've cooked before then turn to the very next page and cook that dish)... and don't cheat... (do it with a friend in the room who will make you stick to it...) it's a challenge after all and you're only cheating yourself... this is specifically designed to take you out of your comfort zone...!
